Chapter 7

“So Shawna and her friends met up with the group of home invaders after they left Colorado, where Fantasia had decided to stay,” Georgia said the following morning. Once I’d driven Colt into town to get his truck and returned to the inn, I shared the details of the conversation Colt and I’d had with Colleen before she fell asleep last evening.

“According to Colleen, after she left Colorado with Jivanica and Shawna, they realized that they were going to run out of cash sooner rather than later since Fantasia had been paying for a lot of the expenses for the entire group up until that point, so when the women met a guy named Gonzo, who invited them to travel with him and his friends, they decided to tag along. Based on what Colleen told us, Gonzo and his friends had spent months breaking into homes while the owners were away for an extended period. Colleen wasn’t sure who was providing Gonzo with information about homes that fit the profile he was looking for, but by the time Colleen and the others joined up with him, he seemed to have a system that worked.”

“And how did Colleen end up in the hospital?” Georgia asked. “Was there an altercation?”

“I guess one of the female members of Gonzo’s group, a woman Colleen only knew as Star, found out that Gonzo had been paying particular attention to Colleen, which caused Star to lash out. Initially, Star and Colleen were simply involved in a yelling match, but then Star picked up a knife that was sitting on the counter and threatened Colleen with it. Colleen tried to grab the knife and ended up cutting her hand. It was a deep cut that bled a lot. Gonzo was afraid the yelling might have been overheard by the neighbors, so he decided they needed to move on immediately. Since they were always ready to move at a moment’s notice if necessary, they were gone by the time Alex and Brax showed up.”

“And Colleen?” Georgia asked.

“She said that even though Shawna bandaged her hand, it still became infected. When she started to develop symptoms such as fever, fast heart rate, and dizziness, Shawna convinced Gonzo to allow her to take Colleen to the hospital. The group had already left Holiday Bay and were staying in an unoccupied house in Ellsworth by that point, which is why she’s in the hospital there. It was Colleen’s opinion, however, that Gonzo had plans to return to Holiday Bay to finish what he started once he found another place to stay.”

“Finished what he started?” Georgia asked.

“She wasn’t sure what Gonzo was up to since he never shared the details of his exploits with Colleen or the others. She knew his plans had been interrupted when Star and Colleen became involved in the shouting match, but she didn’t say what he’d been up to. She did mention that the guy was super paranoid.”

“Paranoid?”

“According to Colleen, in the beginning, Gonzo seemed like a nice guy, but he’d been looking over his shoulder the past month or so.
